When Cullen Wade’s S(p)lasher Flicks: The Swimming Pool in Horror Cinema came to my attention as a possible review, I expected a clever novelty. A book devoted entirely to swimming pools in horror films sounds entertaining enough, but I wondered how much critical weight such a specific topic could support. Quite a bit, as it turns out. Wade’s book is insightful and frequently funny. More importantly, it demonstrates how an ordinary object can become a rich site of cultural meaning….
